SRCC Transformation and Development

The Ikamva Lethu Project (meaning “our future” in isiXhosa) is a major black economic empowerment and land reform initiative in South Africa’s citrus industry. SRCC initiated and is responsible for the development and ongoing management of the project. It operates through Ikamva Lethu Farms (Pty) Ltd, an independent company with its own governance, including a Board of Directors.

  • A group of 17 citrus producers/farmers collectively funded and contributed to the establishment and development costs. These farmers provided the capital and carry the initial risks of the project.
  • The farm was undeveloped land (initially ~1191 hectares total, with development focused on ~600–700 hectares suitable for citrus).
  • Development involves phased establishment including water infrastructure, irrigation, and planting
  • It’s one of the largest and most significant citrus empowerment projects in the country
  • Additional goals include job creation, training and community upliftment in the valley.

  • 1000 expected employment opportunities

Empowerment Through Ownership: Worker Trusts and Enterprises

SRCC proudly supports several successful black economic empowerment initiatives beyond the flagship Ikamva Lethu Project, enabling farm workers and beneficiaries to achieve meaningful ownership and sustainable livelihoods in the citrus sector.

  • Sikhula Sonke Enterprises (Pty) Ltd operates as the business arm of the Sundays River Farming Trust (SRFT), empowering local communities through profitable citrus production. The enterprise manages 5 farms: Willowtree, Glengrove, Sophumelela, Siyathemba, and Siyaphambile. It produces 442,800 cartons annually and directly benefits 27 beneficiaries through ownership structures, skills transfer, and revenue sharing for long-term economic independence.
  • Mbuyiselo Plase stands as a fully worker-owned success story, with 100% ownership held by the Mbuyiselo Workers Trust. This model empowers 23 beneficiaries, providing them with direct control, dividend opportunities, and a stake in the farm’s ongoing performance and growth.

These worker trust-led enterprises demonstrate SRCC’s commitment to broad-based empowerment, job creation, skills development, and true transformation in the Sundays River Valley citrus industry.
